Rappers with Cameras is one of my favorite events in Seattle because of the way that it celebrates art, diversity, and, above all, community, while still being accessible and inviting to individuals of all walks of life and all ages.
You can read part of the origin story here, but the gist of the event is Geo and Thig invite their friends, family, and everyone else on the internet to come to a venue (historically the shared Blue Scholars - The Physics studio), mingle, drink, see the world from their perspective, and strengthen the community. One of the most impressive elements at RwC is that no individual population makes up a majority of the group, and there is rarely a feeling of in-group/out-group dynamics. I rarely hear standard questions like "what do you do?" when people are being introduced, instead conversations circulate about expression, art, music, mutual friends, and which photos were most moving.
Last night's event was no exception. There was a bit of dancing, lots of laughter, and a strong sense of community. People were there to celebrate art as much as they were there to celebrate each other. If you're in the Seattle area, stop by the next RwC. I strongly believe it will be worth your time.
